Missions Moment – January, 2016

stupa-boudinath

In this photo taken by Jordan and Cassie Timpy of Agape Visuals, the Boudhanath peers through a dingy window where candles are lit in worship and devotion. This Boudhanath is one of the largest in the world and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Buddhism is the religion of just under 10% of the Nepali population. Many of the country’s practicing Buddhists live in the northern and more mountainous regions of Nepal. Siddhartha Gautama, the founder of Buddhism, was born in the southern Nepal (though it was India a the time). The Buddha did not profess to be a god but rather a prophet of sorts. He believed he was showing the way of enlightenment to others. The two beliefs that are most often identified with eastern religions like Buddhism and Hinduism are reincarnation and karma. Talking about Christianity in a culture of eastern religions can be challenging. Concepts like original sin, the two-fold nature of Christ, the trinity, and many other doctrines can be like telling someone about a round square… it just doesn’t make sense. As always, prayer, patience, and plenty of dialog is necessary when sharing the Gospel with a Hindu or Buddhist.
